Monument valley tribal park2/14/2024 The area is dominated by dry, sagebrush-covered valleys, but there are giant rocky outcrops that make the valley unique. Monument Valley's landscape is what makes it so easily recognizable. As a result, Monument Valley has become a symbol of the Wild West, with its desertlike, harsh climate and dramatic buttes. However, Monument Valley became so well-known in the mid-1900s, when many cowboy films and westerns were made here. ![]() However, they disappeared – and the silver mine with them. The second mining operation started successfully. They brought back the silver to a more civilized area, and got together investors to start a mining operation. In the 1860s, Merrick and Mitchell discovered silver in the region. The Anasazi abandoned the area in the 1300s, leaving it empty of humans until the arrival of the Navajo. Today over 100 sites and ruins have been found dating from these ancient people, including rock art. Even staying at the Monument Valley for one night is cutting your stay extremely short relative to what there is to see in this part of the Navajo Nation.Īrchaeological evidence indicates that the ancient Anasazi people inhabited the valley until AD 1300. You cannot see Monument Valley and also go further than the Grand Canyon to the south, and Moab to the north in the same day. If you travel from Las Vegas or Phoenix, your trip will take almost the entire day. Many of Monument Valley's visitors are European and Japanese, and it is difficult for them to comprehend the distances you have to travel between destinations. The distances are vast in the United States, and many people do not allow sufficient travel time, especially when they are used to the shorter distances in Europe or Asia. The valley has been the backdrop for many iconic American movies of all time, including Stagecoach (1939), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Easy Rider (1969), and Forrest Gump (1994).Monument Valley is perhaps the most famous example of the classic American West landscape. The valley was popularized by director John Ford, who made Monument Valley one of the most familiar landscapes in the United States when he “discovered” it in the 1930s as a movie location. Monument Valley is said to be one of the most photographed places on earth – although this is a little hyperbolic, as the tribal park gets about 350,000 visitors a year – less than 10% of Grand Canyon visitor numbers and 2.2% of the most-visited park in 2021 (Blue Ridge Parkway). ![]() The Navajo still occupy Monument Valley today, living from farming (sheep, goats and herd cattle) and tourism. The Navajo (who are related to the Apache) came later and built hogans out of logs and mud. The Anasazi Indians were the first people to live in Monument Valley, residing in caves and building large villages around 1200 BCE. Monument Valley (or Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii in Navajo, which means “valley of the rocks”) is a region of the Colorado Plateau.
